First three months
In the first 3 months it is critical you complete a few requirements that are necessary to continue on your journey to successful settlement. The quicker you get them out of the way is the quicker you can focus on the important stuff.
Within the first three months it is very important to keep the momentum going. Please fight the urge to assume all is well and become complacent. Settling takes time and having focused tasks and objectives, help keep you on the right path for the future.
One of the things I put together was a checklist which can indeed be completed with the first three months. After this period it is important that you move on to the next phase and having gotten the first checklist out of the way you can focus on the new challenges ahead.
Critical things to complete
The actual checklist has more items but listed below are the most critical:
- Apply for PR card. (This should be done on landing)
- Get SIN number
- Opening banking accounts
- Getting credit card (Start building your credit score)
- Get you drivers licenses or Provincial ID (if you are a non-driver)
- Apply for your health card (this may have to be done after you get your PR card and Driver licenses or provincial ID)
Things NOT to do
You can get comfortable pretty quickly but below are a list of things not to do:
- Don't NOT complete the items on the checklist
- Don't stay inside and isolate yourself
- Don't stick to only what you know and be closed to learning
- Don't be aggressive
- Don't be depressed and miss everything you knew
- Don't NOT take time to read on various requirement of your provinces, city etc
Impact 360
The journey to success in Canada can be a long one and following the basic requirements is the foundation to avoid hiccups later down the road. Your plan as a new migrant may be to (work, save money, study, build a business, become a citizens) all these can be accomplished eventually in time. Everything is connected in some way and would become relevant at some point. Therefore following the checklist, achieving your objectives, keeping up to date on what is happening and checking on your progress, all keep you in the frame of mind that everyday is a new day on this journey.
