Get Mobile
Communication is always key in life and this is no different. In fact I strongly suggest you get connected as soon as you land because you will definitely need it.
On the first day I landed, I went into a Walmart and took out a prepaid number with unlimited Canada wide calls and 4GB data plan. To get this I had to provide and address and the setup was quick. I already had an unlocked compatible mobile handset so I didn't have to purchase one. Within hours of landing I was already connected. I didn't realize it yet but I would need it more than I expected starting the very next day.
The second day after landing I had already gotten my SIN number, mobile number, applied for my PR card on entry and it was time to explore. I decided to travel for the first time to Toronto alone and discovered this great app called google maps. Google maps works very well in Canada and you can plot your trip and routes on your mobile device.
So there I was on my first bus ride to the Port Credit GO station to catch the Go train to Toronto Union Station. Beside the advice I got from my sister before I left, my phone with data was my very best friend. If you have never travelled in Canada before and don't know your route don't worry once you have data and google maps you can figure it out.
Options
There are many options for mobile devices in Canada but you should consider these.
- Prepaid (SIM and Phone) purchase
- Prepaid card only if you have your own device
- Free prepaid cards. As part of your banking experience some include additional offers. RBC was one such bank that at the time gave you a free Telus prepaid card with a $50 credit as part of your new immigrant account.
- Postpaid packages (these may require credit score and more document to qualify)
- Borrowed number from a friend or relative
Importance
Now as I stated above in my journey, the very next day I was using my mobile. So let's see how important it is.
- Navigating (Walking)
- Transportation
- Opening and account (contact info to put on your record)
- Case of emergencies
- Calling before you arrive or just inquiries
Get connected phone_iphone
Getting connected is very simple in Canada therefore make it one of the things you tick off your list early. You will need it daily especially if you are exploring a lot like I did. I am placing some links below and of course there are lots more options you can pick from also. Lastly, because of the requirements to get a postpaid plan you may not qualify as a brand new immigrant but a prepaid plan will do the job just fine, no surprise cost and you can convert to postpaid later on.
